Workshops & Classes
All workshops and classes are postponed. Patchwork Phoenix will be closed in January and February 2024 for remodeling and renovations.
Tuesday Needlework Nanas
Beginning on January 7, 2024, Tuesday afternoons at Patchwork Phoenix will be open from 1:30 – 4:00 PM for Needlework Nanas. Bring your sewing, quilting, crochet, knitting, cross stitch, embroidery…..whatever…… and enjoy an afternoon with coffee, conversation, and creativity.
Need to do some sewing repair, but don’t have a sewing machine? Just let me know and we’ll have a sewing machine set up for you to use – no charge. Need some help with reading a crochet or knitting pattern? Bring it in and we’ll figure it out.
The first Needlework Nanas will include a instructions, fabric, batting, and thread needed to make a bowl cozy for anyone who wants to participate.
Bowl Cozy
Tuesday, January 7, 2024, 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM – held during first Needlework Nanas.
Bowl Cozies an be used to heat up soup in the microwave or hold a bowl of ice cream to protect your hands from the cold. Be sure to use 100% cotton fabric and thread when placing a microwave because polyester will melt or get brittle. These make perfect gifts for mom, friends, or anyone. Make a set of three different sizes. Pattern and instructions provided for the class.
Please fill out form below to register for the bowl cozy class so that we will have enough supplies ready for everyone.

2023 Summer Fashion Fling
Below are pictures from the 2023 Summer Fashion Fling
Classes for the 2023 Fall Fashion Fling will begin with a parent/child orientation on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 3:30 pm. The classes will be held weekly each Friday at 3:30 pm with the Fashion Fling Fashion show to be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 unless otherwise stated.
Each participant will be assigned a sewing machine to use during class, or they may bring their own. Weekly lessons will include:
- Care and maintenance of their class sewing machine
- How to wind a bobbin and insert into the bobbin case into the sewing machine
- Sewing straight stitches and zig-zag stitches
- Making darts
- Sewing gathers
- Making pleats
- Sewing curves
With the skills learned, the student will make a circular skirt or cape and a blouse or shirt to match using donated fashion fabrics.
The Fashion Fling is free charge. Each participant will receive a Fashion Fling beginner’s kit from Patchwork Phoenix, which includes a pair of fabric scissors, marking pen, seam ripper, sewing gauge, pin cushion and pattern paper and/or fabric.
Pre-registration is required in order to have enough supplies on hand for each participant. Ages are 11 – 17.
Little Blocks
Every Tuesday at 1:30 PM, we alternate between making 4.5″ paper-pieced blocks and 6.5″ blocks from the Wedding Sampler Elm Creek Quilts book, which are a variety of applique, paper-pieced, template and regular pieced blocks.
Shown below are samples of the 4.5″ paper pieced blocks that are available as a download from Sentimental Stitches. Three new blocks are available each week. At the end of the year you’ll have an amazing quilt with over 150 blocks!
The block pictured above is Arizona from the Elm Creek Quilts book. We worked on this block together and learned, or refreshed our memory on, how to make four flying geese at one time, and two half-square triangles. This is the perfect class for beginners through advanced. I guarantee that there will be a block that you’ve never heard of, let alone, made.
Patchwork Phoenix will set up a sewing machine for anyone who needs to use one; we just ask that you bring your own Aurifil thread, or purchase it here. Aurifil is a superior thread that does not shed fibers into the tension discs of sewing machines, and helps to keep them running smoothly longer.

Previous Fashion Fling Fun
Congratulations to Olivia Juroska for her first and second place in the 2022 Colfax County Fair. She received blue ribbons for her bag and jean skirt, and a red ribbon for her circular skirt, all of which she created in the 2022 Spring Fashion Fling.
Congratulations!
The program is free to registered young people ages 10 to 16. Each participant will learn various sewing techniques like sewing seams, making darts, gathering fabric, putting in pleats, and more. These techniques will be used to sew a circular skirt and a pull-over top. The Fall program culminates in a fashion show held at the Shuler Theater where the young people will model their fashions.

So much fun!
2021 Summer Fling Fashion Show
The fashion show was a huge success!
The Fashion Fling is a 12 week program that allows each participant to design his or her own outfit, make the pattern, create the fashion, then model it at the end of the classes. The Summer 2021 Fashion Fling concluded with a wonderful fashion show held in the Historic Shuler Theater.
Each girl did a great job showing off her creation and explaining her process!
We had over 50 enthusiastic attendees during the show and several who came to the reception afterward.
Special Thanks to the following for their help in making this possible!
Volunteers Roxan Sluys, Roxie Shirley, Jo Ozbun, and Cindy Hansen for their help during the weekly classes and during the fashion show.
Donors of fabric, sewing machines, and notions Christie Harwood, Nancy Wilson, Karen Foster, Betsy Leus, Mickey Austin, Carolyn Spottsville, Julie Rogers, Becky Thompson, Ettakay Nickel, Nora Norton. and many others who remained anonymous. Apologies for those I didn’t list here
Marketing – Becky Thompson visited Patchwork Phoenix and taped the Fashion Fling class that she put on her YouTube Channel, Power Tools with Thread. Her video resulted in many donations of fabric, notions, and even sewing machines being shipped and mailed to Patchwork Phoenix for the summer
KRTN and Billy Donati promoted the 2021 Summer Fashion Fling and Billy provided help with lights and music for the Fashion Show at the Shuler.
Thank you to the City of Raton and the Shuler Restoration Commission, Inc. for keeping our beloved Shuler Theater available for the community.
A Special Thank You to the parents who provided snacks throughout the course and encouraged their child or grandchild to express their creativity through this program.
I have received permission to post the following pictures of some of the girls in the fashion show. The registration form for the upcoming 2022 Winter Fashion Show follows the pictures.
